Virtual power plants in Colorado

Colorado's utilities operate outside the organized ISO/RTO markets that cover much of the eastern US. The main residential battery VPP is Xcel Energy-Colorado's Renewable Battery Connect, which gives an upfront incentive plus a five-year participation payment in exchange for up to 60 battery events a year.

Xcel pays an upfront incentive when you install a qualifying battery, and can then call up to 60 three-hour events a year on weekdays to draw on it, paying a yearly participation incentive.

Xcel Energy-Colorado residential customers in good standing, installing through a certified installer.
What it pays
For enrollments after May 2026 (Tesla's listing): $250 per kW or $2,875 per Powerwall 3, up to $5,000 per customer; income-qualified $1,000 per kW AC and disproportionately impacted communities $500 per kW AC (up to 75% of equipment cost); plus $100 a year for five years for taking part in events. Enrollments before May 2026 got $350/kW.
