Virtual power plants in Hawaii

Hawaii has no mainland-style grid operator; Hawaiian Electric runs the grids on Oahu, Maui County and Hawaii Island. Its current battery program is BYOD Plus, which replaced Battery Bonus and pays an upfront per-kW incentive for a battery that exports during a daily 2-hour window the customer chooses. In 2026 the Hawaii PUC also opened a proceeding on a broader utility storage/grid-services program.

Hawaiian Electric Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Plus

Your battery exports energy every day during a 2-hour window you choose, after covering the home's own needs. You get a one-time per-kW incentive and, on most tariffs, a fixed monthly export credit.

New batteries paired with rooftop solar (no standalone batteries), at least 1 kW committed, advanced meter, 5-year commitment (prorated repayment if you leave early).
What it pays
$400 per kW committed (no cap), plus an extra $400/kW for low-to-moderate income participants. Monthly export credits on non-NEM tariffs (example: 5 kW committed gets $2,000 one-time plus about $52/month).
